CROSSING the RIVER
A Stubbs Family Portrait by Karen Wilson Seams
The true story of Josie Johnson Stubbs and her husband, Lewis Stubbs,
raising their family in Brownville Junction, Maine in the early 20th Century
Excerpts from the Introduction:
Josephine Sarah Johnson and Lewis Carroll Stubbs were, by all appearances, very ill
suited for each other.
These two, a ministers daughter from Nova Scotia and a
quarrymans son from central Maine, were remarkable people, though they would be the
first to deny that this is so.
Theirs' is a story worth telling. Share their lives here, pieced together
by letters and poems, pictures, and the recollections of family and friends. For its
the people who knew them best who have the most vivid memories, and memories like this
stay with you always.
From the inside cover:
Crossing the River began life nearly five years ago as a simple attempt to save a
few letters and stories about the courtship of the Authors parents. But it assumed a
life of its own when she discovered the letters and poetry of her grandmother, Josephine
Johnson Stubbs. Then came the letters of her Methodist ministry great grandparents from
Nova Scotia, Canada from the 1800s and the footprint and historical importance of
the work became wider. When the Author began her skillful weaving of the story line by
filling in gaps with historical reminders, it left the domain of the Stubbs family and
became a historical Good Read. It is history (1850s 2006) brought
down to the family level, real people, who lived
and live, in Sunbeam and Shadow. If
youre curious about life and the hardships in rural Maine, and in bringing the
Methodist ministry to various Nova Scotia towns in the Canadian Maritimes, the poetry,
letters, and personal recollections in Crossing the River - A Stubbs Family Portrait will
enlighten and entertain you.
