THE GOLDEN AGE OF DC COMICS 1935 - 1956
by Paul Levitz
Taschen America, L.L.C.

Hardcover book is new in original shrink-wrap. "The single most comprehensive book on the subject, this volume traces DC Comics's first decades, from its pulp origins up to the comic book burnings of the McCarthy '50s in over 400 pages bursting with comics, art, photographs, and more comics. This is the first in this series, expanded from the Eisner Award-winning book 75 Years of DC Comics. Includes updated essays author Paul Levitz and over 1,000 new images across five volumes. "
THE BRONZE AGE OF DC COMICS 1970 - 1984
by Paul Levitz with Dennis O'Neil,

Neal Adams and Carmine Infantino
Taschen America, L.L.C.

Hardcover book is new in original shrink-wrap. By the time Christopher Reeve portrayed Superman in the movies, the comic book was ensconced as "one of the country's most significant native art forms. That art form, however, was already moving in a new direction. Influenced by the emergence of underground comics and shifting political tides, DC's line of comics was increasingly aimed at adults. Socially relevant subjects such as drug addiction, racism, and women's rights had entered the mainstream, and comics weren't just for kids anymore. The Bronze Age of DC Comics includes an original interview with Green Lantern/Green Arrow writer Denny O'Neil."

THE SILVER AGE OF DC COMICS 1956 - 1970
by Paul Levitz
Taschen America, 2013

Hardcover book is new in original shrink-wrap. "With super heroes nearly extinct at the start of the 1950s, DC Comics reignited the fire that would make them central to modern popular culture by infusing them with science fiction elements. DC's writers and editors spun ever-more fantastic tales, bringing super heroes and Bob Hope alike into the realm of sci-fi. The results were transformative, delivering the first-ever "reboot" of Golden Age greats with the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman as well as the hit TV show Batman. The Silver Age of DC Comics chronicles it all. Plus, a new exclusive interview with Green Lantern/Batman artist Neal Adams!"

Cheech Wizard's Big Book of Me collects all of Bode's Cheech Wizard comics in a single volume."

FREE COUNTRY
A TALE OF THE CHILDRENS CRUSADE

by Neil Gaiman, et al
DC Comics, 2015

"A long time ago, I wrote the first part of a story, and waited to find out how it middled, then worked with Jamie Delano and Alisa Kwitney on the end. For years people have asked how and when they could read all the story of The Children's Crusade. I'm glad to say that it's now been retooled and refinished, and is something both old and new - a forgotten jewel and a new delight."-Neil Gaiman
"For the first time ever, the two-issue miniseries, The Children's Crusade written by Neil Gaiman, Alisa Kwitney and Jamie Delano, is collected - and with them, a new middle chapter written by Toby Litt that completes the tale as Gaiman originally envisioned it.

When several children go missing in a small English town, the Dead Boy Detectives are on the case. A series of strange and unexpected twists takes them to Free Country, a place that dates back a millennium, where children never grow old and are free from the abuse and tyranny of adults. But Free Country is failing, and what it needs is the strength of five innately powerful children - including the young sorcerer Timothy Hunter - to restore their uncanny world to what it once was."

FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS

Adapted by Troy Little
IDW - TOP SHELF, 2015

"In partnership with the Hunter S. Thompson Estate, Top Shelf Productions presents Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a delightfully bonkers graphic novel by Eisner-nominated artist Troy Little adapting Thompson's seminal book of the same name. Join Thompson's alter ego Raoul Duke on the mother of all Vegas benders, as he and his attorney Dr. Gonzo cover a motorcycle race, crash a drug-enforcement convention, and rack up obscenely large room-service bills, all while dosed to the gills on a truly spectacular assortment of mind-altering substances."
"Troy Little masterfully captures the madness and essential humor that makes this book an enduring classic." -Darick Robertson
"Pre-ether binge reading material. Glorious madness, as mercilessly demented as its original counterpart." -John Layman

Chartwell Books, New York, 2015
(W) Jerry Siegel (A) Joe Schuster, Jack Burnley

"This compilation of comic books from the early years of Superman reveals his involvement in World War II. Superman was not like any previous comic book character. He was the first costumed man with two identities, who possessed extraordinary strength and powers. He would protect the public when ordinary measures would not do. He was not the first super hero, but the Man of Steel would become the prototype for all super heroes thereafter."

Includes stories from Action Comics #1, June 1938 through the pages of Action, Superman, and World's Finest Comics to Superman #34, May-June, 1945. Illustrated in color tthroughout. Many of the covers from the era are printed here as full-page illustrations.

We have several copies available at this time.

AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE
A MARVELOUS MEMOIR

Written by Stan Lee and Peter David,
Art by Colleen Doran,
Touchstone, New York, 2015

"In this gorgeously illustrated, full-color graphic memoir, Stan Lee - the comic book legend and co-creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, the Incredible Hulk, and a legion of other Marvel superheroes - shares his iconic legacy and the story of how modern comics came to be. Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. He has been the leading creative force behind Marvel Comics, and has brought to life some of the world's best-known heroes and most infamous villains throughout his career. Lee put the human in superhuman and in doing so, created a new mythology for the twentieth century. In this beautifully illustrated graphic memoir, illustrated by Colleen Doran, Lee tells the story of his life with the same wit, energy, and offbeat spirit that he brought to the world of comics. Moving from his impoverished childhood in Manhattan to his early days writing comics, through his military training films during World War II and the rise of the Marvel empire in the 1960s to the current resurgence in movies, Amazing Fantastic Incredible documents the life of a man and the legacy of an industry and career. This funny, moving, and honest memoir is a must-have for collectors and fans of comic books and graphic novels of every age."

GOODNIGHT DARTH VADER by  Jeffrey Brown

TOUCHSTONE

"It's bedtime in the Star Wars galaxy, and Darth Vader's parenting skills are tested anew in this delightful follow-up to the breakout New York Times-bestsellers Darth Vader and Son and Vader's Little Princess. In this Episode, the Sith Lord must soothe his rambunctious twins, Luke and Leia - who are not ready to sleep and who insist on a story. As Vader reads, the book looks in on favorite creatures, droids, and characters, such as Yoda, R2-D2, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett, and many others as they tuck in, yawn, and settle down to dream. As ever, Jeffrey Brown's charming illustrations and humor glow throughout, playing on children's book conventions to enchant adults and kids alike."

DARTH VADER AND SON by Jeffrey Brown
CHRONICLE BOOKS

"What if Darth Vader took an active role in raising his son? What if "Luke, I am your father" was just a stern admonishment from an annoyed dad? In this hilarious and sweet comic reimagining, Darth Vader is a dad like any other - except with all the baggage of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Celebrated artist Jeffrey Brown's delightful illustrations give classic Star Wars moments a fresh twist, presenting the trials and joys of parenting through the lens of a galaxy far, far away."

DARTH VADER & FRIENDS by Jeffrey Brown
TOUCHSTONE

"In this funny and sweet new book in the bestselling Darth Vader series, Eisner Award-winning author Jeffrey Brown offers an intimate look at the friendships between best pals in the Star Wars universe, from Darth Vader and the Emperor to Leia and her Ewok pals, Han and Chewie, C-3PO and R2-D2, the bounty hunters, and other favorite characters. Jealousy, birthday parties, lightsaber battles, sharing, intergalactic rebellion, and more all come into play as Brown's charming illustrations and humor irresistibly combine the adventures of our friends in a galaxy far, far away with everyday events closer to home."

The Golden Age

Masterworks from the Golden Age of Illustration Vol. 2

The Illustrated Press, Saint Louis, Missouri, 2015

This week we received the second volume in this excellent series from Illustration Magazine devoted to the art that appeared in the popular press before World War II. The official blurb: "In the days before radio, movies, or television, print was the dominant entertainment media. From roughly 1880 through the 1930s (and slightly beyond) a "Golden Age of Illustration" flourished. Newspapers, magazines, and books were covered with beautiful images, and the illustrators who created the brilliant artwork for these publications were superstars. This glorious new book collects the work of over 211 of the greatest illustrators from the period, presenting their masterworks in beautiful full page, full color reproductions-with every iconic image photographed directly from the original artwork. Produced and edited by the publisher of Illustration Magazine, this book is a collection that no fan of classic illustration art will want to miss."

We have new copies of Volume 2, still in the original shrink-wrap, available at this writing.
Also, Volume 3 is being solicited this month for release in October. Call now to reserve a copy.

H. P. LOVECRAFT Series by ALAN MOORE

PROVIDENCE #1 (OF 12)
AVATAR PRESS INC., 2015

Last month we saw the long-awaited arrival of Alan Moore's breathtaking epic PROVIDENCE, (created) with his artistic partner Jacen Burrows. In his most carefully considered work in decades, Moore deconstructs all of H. P. Lovecraft's concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history. Both sequel and prequel to NEONOMICON, PROVIDENCE begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of HPL flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America. Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience. The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of Horror.

prov1ds.jpg (71202 bytes)

prov1port.jpg (65951 bytes)

prov1at2.jpg (148820 bytes)

Moore has designed every cover, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. There are no ads, all 32 pages are written by Moore, and Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages. The entire work is already written, intricately crafted to tie the most nuanced threads together over the breadth of the series. Painstakingly researched, meticulously produced, this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago: this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be. Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

This week we received issue #2 of Providence.

THE ALLURING ART OF MARGARET BRUNDAGE
by Stephen D. Korshak and J. David Spurlock,

Vanguard Productions, 2013.

Margaret Brundage was an innovator who created a hybrid between pin-up, fantasy and horror art. She forever changed the look of Fantasy, Science-Fiction, and Horror with her alluring sensationalistic covers for the notorious pulp magazine, Weird Tales which featured stories by H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch and Robert E. Howard, among many others. Long before Frazetta, it was Brundage who was the first painter of Conan. Her lush, provocative scenes of smoldering, semi-nude women generated great controversy in the 1930's. This lavishly illustrated compendium on the ground-breaking "Queen of the Pulps" presents all of her Weird Tales and Conan covers. Also included is a biographical article titled the "Secret Life of Margaret Brundage". This is a new book, still in its original shrink-wrap.
